Nielsen Named Big Ten Men’s Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week

Nielsen guided MSU to a road win over Maryland.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore Patrick Nielsen was honored on Tuesday as the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Nielsen, a defender from Copenhagen, Denmark, earned his first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor after MSU's 2-0 road win over Maryland. He scored the game-winning goal against the Terps in the 15th minute. On the defensive side, he helped hold Maryland scoreless despite recording nine shots. He is the second Spartan to earn Defensive Player of the Week after Jimmy Hague was honored on Aug. 28. Overall, MSU has earned three B1G honors after DeJuan Jones captured Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 11.
Michigan State is ranked in the top 15 in all three polls this week. The Spartans are ranked No. 8 in the this week's United Soccer Coaches poll with a record of 9-1-2. College Soccer News has MSU ranked No. 8, while standing No. 13 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll.
The Spartans host Akron on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Michigan State will then hit the road to face Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m
