Swimming & Diving To Compete In Two Invitationals

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State diving program will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Hawkeye Invitational while the swimming program will be competing for three days of action at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.

The Hawkeye Invitational is scheduled November 15-17, with each day starting at 7 a.m. CT. The Northwestern Invitational is scheduled for November 16-18, beginning at 9 a.m. CT.

"This is a great invitational, we've been there a number of times. It's really a great meet for us, it's good competition with one Big Ten team being there, but there's a lot of really good swimmers outside of the Big Ten athletes," said Head Coach Matt Gianiodis. "Our deal has always been stay within yourself, challenge yourself, try to be the best you can be and we're just looking to doing the best that we can out there."

The women's team is coming off a loss this past Friday. The Spartans were defeated by the Falcons of Bowling Green 179-121.  Strong performances came from Lauren Biglin, Erin Szara, and Kennedy Truex who all claimed their first wins as Spartans. Biglin took first in the 500 freestyle, Szara in the 100 breaststroke, and Truex in the 100 freestyle.

The men last competed on Nov. 3 when they hosted Kenyon College. The Spartans came out on top with a score of 190-108.  They ended the meet with 15 first-place finishes, two of which came from Jonathan Lee who won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

"I'm looking forward our trip to Iowa. This will be a great challenge to our athletes," said Head Diving Coach Eric Best. "With over 45 women and 30 men competing, this meet will be very good preparation for the Big Ten Championship in February."

The women's diving team has found their way into top finishes in each of the five meets they have competed in. Twice this season the Spartan women took first, second, third and fourth-place, against both Iowa and Kenyon.

The men's diving team has only competed in three meets so far this season and too find themselves in top finishes. In their last meet against Kenyon on Nov. 3, the Spartan men finished second and third in the 1-meter and first and third in the 3-meter.

Finals results will be posted to msuspartans.com at the conclusion of each day.
