WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Michigan State men's golf team took third place in the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, North Carolina, with a 15-over-par 879 (283-292-304). The Spartans shot a 16-over-par 304 in Monday's windy final round at the Country Club of Landfall Nicklaus Course as all 14 teams in the field finished the third round over par.
Host UNC-Wilmington won the tournament at 2-under-par 862, while Campbell took second place at 10-over-par 874.
"We got off to a good start, but we just weren't able to stop making some big mistakes and those cost us," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "We competed hard and had a good attitude, but like I said, we made too many mistakes in bad weather. We're definitely continuing to develop."
Senior Michael Sharp and freshman James Piot both fired 3-over-par 75s in Monday's final round and tied for sixth place at 1-over-par 217. Sharp was even on the front nine on Monday and then 3-over-par on the back nine. Piot was the opposite as he finished Monday's front nine 3-over-par and then used three birdies on the back nine to pull even.
"It was a good learning experience for both Michael and James to be in the hunt," Lubahn said. "James continues to impress and I really believe Michael can win one of these tournaments."
After being 5-over-par on the front nine Monday, sophomore Andrew Walker rebounded on the back nine to finish the day at 4-over-par 76. He was 8-over-par 224 (71-77-76) for the tournament, taking 25th place.
Senior Charlie Green carded a 6-over-par 78 in the third round and was 12-over-par 228 (78-72-78) for the tournament.
Sophomore Kaleb Johnson finished the tournament 15-over-par 231 (72-76-83).
Freshman Zach Rosendale competed in the tournament as an individual and shot a 13-over-par 229 (77-75-77), tying for 40th place.
Blake McShea of UNCW was one of four players to finish the tournament under par and claimed the title with a 4-under 212.
Michigan State will be back in action April 14-15 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
