MSU scored three goals in the final 45 minutes to improve to 3-0.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Freshman forward Camryn Evans scored her first two collegiate goals, while junior midfielder Sadie Misiewicz and junior defender Kassidy Madrigal added a score apiece to pace Michigan State women's soccer to a 4-0 win over Green Bay at DeMartin Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 3-0 on the season with the victory, as the Phoenix fall to 0-3.
How It Happened: It didn't take long for Camryn Evans to find the back of the net in her second-career start as a Spartan. Just 28 seconds into the game, Evans stole the ball from a Green Bay player, beat a defender 1v1 and dropped a shot over the head of keeper Taylor Reichow for a 1-0 MSU lead.
After the opening flurry from Evans neither team could find an offensive rhythm for the remainder of the half. MSU finished the first 45 minutes with four shots, while the Phoenix were only able to manage a single shot.
A motivational talk from MSU head coach Tom Saxton at halftime led to a strong offensive showing in the second half.
"I told them at halftime it was a critical moment for our team," Saxton said. "We stood around in the first half and sometimes when you score in the first minute it can kind of promote that. We talked about effort and attitude, and they responded splendidly. I was really pleased with the response."
Barely three minutes into the second frame sophomore midfielder Danielle Stephan found Misiewicz with room down the left side, dropping a nice ball in to give the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week a chance at making something happen. Misiewicz saw an open Evans in front of the goal, and she put a cross right on the foot of the Spartan rookie, who finished with a one-touch flick into the back of the net, making it 2-0 for MSU.
The Spartans weren't done scoring quality goals as Misiewicz knocked in her fourth of the season in the 57th minute, blasting a one-timer from 16-yards out that Reichow didn't have a chance to get a hand on for a 3-0 lead.
Madrigal put away the fourth and final goal in the 70th minute, taking a Green Bay turnover and firing a laser beam into the upper 90 as Reichow could just stand and watch it go in.
MSU out-shot the Phoenix 14-2, with 10 shots coming in the strong offensive showing during the final 45 minutes. The Spartans had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"We had some nice goals, and I was happy to see us put a few more on the board," Saxton said. "Now it's on to some tougher challenges, and we need to get ready for that. The speed of play is going to pick up. We're going to really emphasize tempo in training next week."
Up Next: MSU heads to the Pacific Northwest for the Husky/Nike Invitational and the first away games of the season in Seattle. The Spartans will face Portland on Aug. 30 before taking on host Washington Sept. 2.
