EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State women's soccer team battled Minnesota to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in the Big Ten home opener at DeMartin Stadium Thursday night.
MSU played to its second double-overtime draw in the last three games, and third of the season after tying Purdue 2-2 (Sept. 13), and Washington (Sept. 2). Â
Â
The Spartans sit at 5-2-3 overall and 0-1-2 in conference, while the Golden Gophers move to 5-4-1 and 1-1-1 in Big Ten play.Â
MSU redshirt-junior goalkeeper Reilley Ott recorded her sixth shutout after coming into the game second in the conference with five clean sheets this season.
Â
"We needed to get back home and get settled after being gone 10 of the last 18 days with our trip to Seattle and the opening Big Ten weekend," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "The way we showed up and played tonight was a good sign. We bounced back after a not so good performance against Indiana last time out. I'm pleased we're taking steps forward."
How It Happened: Both teams were looking to establish control early on, limiting quality offensive opportunities for each side. Through the first 45 minutes, MSU had taken three shots while the Gophers had just one on the board.
Â
With less than a minute to go in regulation, sophomore forward Alexandra Thomas had open space between herself and Minnesota keeper Maddie Nielsen before she was taken down just outside the 18, but no whistle was blown.
Â
The Spartans' best shot at the game-winner came in the 104th minute, when junior midfielder Sadie Misiewicz chipped a curling shot from 13-yards out. The ball went over the head of Nielsen and was headed far post, but it just missed sneaking into the net.
Â
Ott made four saves as Nielsen recorded two. The Gophers held an 11-8 advantage in shots, but MSU tallied 10 corner kicks to the six taken by Minnesota.
Â
Junior midfielder Hannah Jones got off three shots for MSU, and Misiewicz managed two. Redshirt-junior Michaela Kovacs, freshman forward Gia Wahlberg, and junior forward Lydia Franks each took one shot for the Spartans.
Â
"I thought we created chances with a defensive game plan coming in," Saxton said. "We had a counter-attack mentality and won 10 corners. I was disappointed we didn't stick the ball across the line, otherwise I was very pleased with the performance. We should protect our home turf and we need to keep that going with Wisconsin coming in here on Sunday."
Â
Up Next: MSU returns to DeMartin Stadium Sunday for a 1 p.m kickoff against No. 17 Wisconsin. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
