East Lansing, Mich. - The season opener for the Michigan State swimming and diving team is this weekend against the University of Iowa. The Spartans will take on their Big Ten opponent Friday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. at the IM West Indoor Pool.
"It's really early in the season to do this meet. Mark Long is the head coach at Iowa - He's a great coach, he runs a great program. They're a good team to do this against at this point in the season because they'll compete really hard and they'll test our kids pretty hard,"Michigan State head coach Matt Gianiodis said.
The men return only two seniors for the 2018-19 season but have a strong leadership in their younger swimmers. Such leadership comes from junior, Payton Woods, who broke three school records at the Big Ten championships last season. He recorded a 19.71 time for the 50 free and anchored for both the 200 medley, 1:26.85, and the 400 medley, 3:11.82.
The women will bring back seven seniors this year. Seniors Cathryn Armstrong and Ana Sortland are to play a big role for the Spartans coming off last season where their squad broke two school records. They recorded a 1:39.67 time for the 200 medley and a 3:39.51 time for the 400 medley.
The men and women combined broke 10 varsity records last year. The Spartans will look to maintain this success as the face the Hawkeyes.
"They'll all compete really hard and it's a Big Ten meet and it means a lot to win it and so I have an expectation that we'll get their best. Again, it's kind of early to do this in the season, but they'll be ready to go," Gianiodis said.
