Michigan State won Friday's shootout, 4-3.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Playing in their third overtime game of the season on Friday, September 7, the Michigan State field hockey team defeated Monmouth University at Ralph Young Field by a final score of 2-1. With the game undecided after 90 minutes, MSU defeated the Hawks in a shootout, 4-3.
Michigan State improved to 3-3 on the season while Monmouth fell to 2-3. The Hawks will wrap up their trip to the Great Lakes State on Sunday with a game against Michigan.
This is the second-straight season the Spartans have defeated a team in a penalty shootout, defeating Ohio State by way of shootout on September 24 of last season.
The Spartans were out-shot by Monmouth 13-11 overall and the Hawks held a 7-5 shots on goal advantage. MSU attempted 10 penalty corners, but came up short on each.Â
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell turned in a strong goalkeeping performance on Friday making six saves and allowing one goal. Arundell's season goals against average dropped to 1.86 and her save percentage increased to .739. "Jade on the shootout was awesome," said head coach Helen Knull. "She brings us confidence and we all have such belief and trust in her."
Following a scoreless first half of action, Monmouth struck first as Georgia Garden-Bachop placed one past Arundell from directly in front of the cage.Â
Monmouth maintained a 1-0 advantage until the 68th minute when freshman Maddie McDonough took a hard slapshot that found the back of the cage for her first career goal. McDonough was set-up by junior Maggie Cole.
Two goalless periods of overtime forced a shootout to determine the winner. Arundell made the first stop on Monmouth's Annick van Lange in round two before stopping Josephine van der Hoop in round four. Junior Kelsey Keener, freshman Isa van der Weij, freshman Aisha Osinga, and McDonough all converted on attempts for the Spartans. McDonough's round five strike proved to be the game-winner for Michigan State.
