
Spartans Wrap up Day One of MSU Beeman Invite

East Lansing, Mich. - The Spartans opened play at the 2019 Beeman Invite with three wins Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
For the invite, doubles tandems squared off in a six-point tiebreaker followed by singles match versus each doubles opponent.
"Great competitive tennis matches today at the MSU Indoor Facility," said head coach Gene Orlando. "The tandems of Carlin/Matsuno and Pero/Gates will try to punch their ticket to the semifinals tomorrow."
MSU's John Carlin and Kazuki Matsuno joined freshmen Drew Keene and Jarreau Campbell in doubles action to begin the day.The Spartans faced off against DePaul and Indiana in the morning session in both doubles and singles. Carlin and Matsuno fell to Wassenaar and Minsass, 6-4, while Keene and Campbell fell to Fletchall and Vukovic of Indiana, 6-4.
In singles action, Carlin rolled in straight sets over Wassenaar, 6-4, 6-4. Campbell fell in a battle to Vukovic of Indiana (6-3, 6-1) and Keene dropped a close one with Fletchall of Indiana, 6-3, 7-6(4).
After winning in a first set tiebreaker over DePaul's Minsass (7-6(4)), Matsuno fell in the second set, 6-4. It was all Matsuno in the match tiebreaker as the freshman rolled to a 10-1 victory to put him and Carlin through in the winners bracket.
In the afternoon portion, Anthony Pero joined fellow sophomore Carson Gates in doubles action, taking on DePaul's Tuff and Zador. The pairs battled in a back and forth match, before Pero and Gates took control and claimed a tiebreaker win (7-6(5)) for the Spartans.
Pero used momentum from the intense doubles match and carried it into his singles match, where he won in a match tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(6) over Tuff of DePaul. Gates fell in a close first set to Zador of DePaul, 7-6, before rallying to take the second set in dominate fashion, 6-0. Gates and Zador battled in the match tiebreaker, before Zador pulled off the 11-9 win.
Carlin and Matsuno continued second round doubles action against Fenty and Siimar of Michigan. The Wolverine duo collected the 6-1 win and await tomorrow's singles action to see who advances to the semifinals.
Campbell and Keene fell in their second round doubles matchup, 7-6 (3), to Clegg and Snezhko of Iowa before Gates and Pero were defeated by Davies and Tyler of Iowa, 6-1.
Due to inclement weather, the invite will be played tomorrow indoors at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Action picks back up tomorrow with consolation singles at 8 a.m. followed by main draw singles at 10 a.m. Consolation doubles will begin at 11:30 a.m. with doubles main draw to follow.
