EVANSTON, ILL. – Michigan State women's soccer fell in a tough battle with Northwestern, 2-1, on the road on Friday night.
MSU falls to 8-5-1 on the season and a 1-4-1 mark in conference play, while Northwestern improves to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Big Ten games.
Michigan State held the advantage in shots, 9-3, and shots on goal, 7-2, throughout the game.
"I thought it was a great game overall in pretty much all facets," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "There were some lulls in the game for us; we kept pressure on them. There were six saves for Northwestern, zero for us. It's a game of chances, and we didn't capitalize when we needed to despite playing really well, front-to-back and back-to-front. That's the nature of our sport. We've talked about it all year; critical moments."
The Spartans got on the board early in the first half, with junior midfielder Danielle Stephan finding the foot of freshman forward Paige Webber in the ninth minute. Stephan was able to free the ball and pass it up field to a waiting Webber, who snuck the ball past the Northwestern goalkeeper.
This was Webber's fifth goal of the season, while Stephan tallied her sixth assist.
Northwestern responded less than four minutes later, with Lily Gilbertson finding the ball through traffic in the box and netting it past redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal
The rest of the first 45 minutes were evenly contested, with no team being able to break the tie after a strong offensive start. MSU led Northwestern in shots, 4-2, and shots on goal, 2-1, at halftime.
The Wildcats went up 2-1 with Olivia Korhonen netting the eventual game-winning goal.
Michigan State started to find its rhythm as the half came to a close, with five of the nine shots coming in the second 45, but were unable to find an equalizer.
Six Spartans played a full 90 minutes, including sophomore forward Camryn Evans who had six shots, with four shots on goal.
"On a road trip it's nice to get the first one, but we'll try to regroup. It starts with psychology," Saxton said. "They've been able to bounce back before, so we'll go down to Illinois and give it everything we have."
UP NEXT: The Spartans close out the last road trip of the regular season at Illinois on Sunday afternoon, with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. (ET).
