Michigan State senior guard Joshua Langford (Huntsville, Ala./Madison Academy) was one 20 players selected to the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award Watch List. Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its sixth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball.Â
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
Langford, who missed most of last season with an injury, started 13 games in 2018-19 and averaged 15.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, while connecting on 44.3 percent of his shots from the floor and 40.3 percent from 3-point land.
The 6-5 guard was the recipient of the team's Stephen G. Scofes Inspirational Player Award last season, as Langford continued to be a valued presence for the team during its run to the 2019 Final Four.
Langford scored in double figures in the first 12 games of the season, including nine games with a least 14 points. He set a career-high with 29 points, hitting 10-of-16 shots from the floor and 5-of-6 from 3-point land, against Texas in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.
As a sophomore in 2017-18, Langford 11.7 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 40.3 percent from long distance and starting all 37 games.
He enters his senior year with a career average of 10.2 points per game, while shooting 45.1 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from 3-point distance.
This is the second recognition for an MSU player by the Basketball Hall of Fame, as senior guard Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) was selected to the Watch List for the 2020 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.
Michigan State finished the 2018-19 season with a 32-7 overall record and advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for a nation's-best eighth time in the last 21 years. The Spartans won a share of the Big Ten Regular Season title, captured the Big Ten Tournament title, beat rival Michigan three times and won the NCAA Tournament East Regional with a thrilling victory over No. 1 seed Duke.
The Spartans open the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, hosting Albion College in an exhibition game at the Breslin Center. The matchup features Winston facing the team that includes his two brothers, sophomore guard Zach Winston and freshman guard Khy Winston.
The regular season starts on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with the Spartans playing Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic on ESPN. The game will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
