Spartans Complete Day Two of ITA Midwest Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis continued action at the ITA Midwest Regionals at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Friday.
The day began with the round of 16 of qualifying singles, where junior Mary Lewis and sophomore Jennifer Timotin were able to win their matches and advance to the main draw.
Lewis defeated Lucie Prochazkova of Illinois-Chicago in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3, to become the first Spartan to advance to the main draw.
After falling in the first set, Timotin mounted a comeback and defeated Isabelle Marshall of Illinois-Chicago, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Elsewhere in qualifying singles, freshman Dagmar Zdrubecka battled with DePaul's Aspa Avgeri, but fell 6-1, 6-2.
Lewis and Timotin will both begin main draw singles action tomorrow afternoon.
Main draw doubles also began today with five Spartan duos competing. Two duos, senior Sammie Memije and sophomore Nicole Stephens and sophomores Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz advanced to the round of 16 and will continue action on Saturday morning.
Lemonds and Pietrowicz paired to blank Toledo's Patricia Panta and Laura Morera, 8-0, in the opening round, before defeating Marquette's Giulia Turconi and Lesley Foe, 8-3, in the round of 32.
The duo of Memije and Stephens downed Anna Makarova and Charmaine Seah from Big Ten opponent Wisconsin, 8-2, before blanking Northern Illinois' Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko, 8-0, to advance to the next round of play.
Also in doubles, Lewis and Timotin paired and fell to Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic of Marquette, 8-4. Zdrubecka and freshman Tia Mukherjee fell to Akron's Anna Uljanov and Claudia Rosas, 8-2. Freshman Monique Karoub and sophomore Kate Harvey fell to Youngstown State's Imaan Hassim and Tamara Teufl, 8-2.
UP NEXT: In doubles play, Memije and Stephens will face No. 2-seed Julie Bryne and McColgan of Northwestern in the round of 16. Lemonds and Pietrowicz will also take on a Northwestern duo, Ogut and Hand.
In singles, six Spartans will compete in the main draw, including Memije who is the No. 9 seed and will have a first round bye.
