
Carless, Memije and Panasiuk Honored as PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2019-20 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.

The honorees for October are Sarah Carless (women's rowing), Samantha Memije (women's tennis) and Mike Panasiuk (football). Â

Carless, a senior from Kalamazoo, Mich., is majoring in kinesiology. She is a three-time letterwinner, including rowing in the varsity eight boat for all six regattas last season. Carless is heavily involved in Michigan State's chapter Athletes in Action, and regularly holds bible study sessions on campus. Over the summer she helped coached elementary-aged children at rowing camps throughout the area.

Memije, a senior from Monroeville, Pa., is majoring in communication. Playing primarily out of the No. 1 or No. 2 slots, Memije finished her junior season with a 13-12 singles record and led the team with 18 doubles wins. For her career, she owns a 44-25 singles and 40-32 doubles record. In the classroom, she is a three-time member of the ITA Scholar-Athlete Team, and twice named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten. In the community, Memije has been involved with Haven House, Ronald McDonald House, March is Reading Month, Teams For Toys, Spartan Buddies, and numerous on-campus outreach opportunities.

Panasiuk, a senior from Roselle, lll., is majoring in human capital and society. Panasiuk has started 36 straight games on the Spartan defensive line, which led the FBS in rushing defense last season. In 45 career games, Panasiuk has 81 tackles, including 15.5 for losses with three sacks. This season,
Panasiuk already has a career-high 6.5 tackles for loss and 17 stops overall. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten the last two seasons. Panasiuk joined his teammates on visits to local hospitals and homeless shelters during the Spartans' last two bowl trips to San Diego and San Francisco. In the Greater Lansing area, he has been involved with Lansing Promise and local Accessible Trick or Treating initiatives.
