EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer fell to Indiana, 1-0, in the season finale at DeMartin Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
MSU completes the 2019 season with an 8-10-1 record and a 1-9-1 conference record. Indiana improves to 4-5-2 in the Big Ten and will play in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend.
Â
The Spartans and Hoosiers were originally scheduled to play on Friday, Sept. 27, but the game was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
Â
"I think it was a tough performance," MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We came out and dominated possession the first half and weren't able to generate any shots. I have to give their defense a lot of credit. They are a defensive team and that was very effective today; they got the break though. Unfortunately we made a mistake on corner. It's a little bit of what we have seen the last couple of weeks. We're in these games, we're competitive, but we're not able to capitalize on the few chances we had today and again credit to their D, but we had a breakdown. A 0-0 game was a fair result the way things we're going. Unfortunately again they made a play, so it is what it is now."
Â
In the first half, play was even between the two squads, with both teams playing for different motivators. The Spartans were looking to end its season on a positive note, while Indiana was searching for a bid to the Big Ten Tournament.
Â
Indiana had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes and also had a 1-0 edge in corner kicks.
Â
The best look of the game for the Spartans came from defender Samantha White, who fired a shot from outside the box, but it was saved by Indiana goalkeeper Bethany Kopel.
Â
In the 73rd minute, the Hoosiers got on the board with a goal by leading scorer Avery Lockwood off a corner kick. Meghan Scott took the corner kick and put it inside the box, where Lockwood was able to find the loose ball and put it in the back of the net.
Â
As the game came to a close, the Spartans continued to look for an equalizer and had a few forwards making runs, but weren't able to capitalize.
Â
"Like I told the team in the locker room before the game, we've been mentally tough all season," Saxton said. "We've come back from things we control and what we don't control and given our all. I think that was certainly the case today. There's never been an ounce of quit in this team. We just have to learn to make big plays and we've got a good young group coming back next year so we'll be optimistic and positive moving forward."
