Michigan State's student-athletes turned in a record-setting academic semester in school history, posting new all-time high departmental semester and cumulative GPAs.
"The performance by Spartan student-athletes in the classroom this fall was exceptional," MSU athletic director Bill Beekman said. "I couldn't be more proud of the students and what they've accomplished. Their efforts on the field are very public, but to see them work just as hard in the classroom, where their success often goes unnoticed, brings great pride to all of us within the department. Their academic achievements are a tribute to their character, the support they receive from our student-athlete support services, and the importance our coaches place on the classroom."
Across the board, Spartan student-athletes posted a record 3.1788 cumulative GPA, marking the 18th consecutive semester over a 3.0 cumulative GPA. They also established a new mark with the highest all-time department semester GPA (3.1674).
Twenty of MSU's 23 programs posted a cumulative 3.0 GPA, setting a new department record, and a record-tying 18 teams registered a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. Seven teams posted their all-time high cumulative GPA, led by men's tennis which recorded a 3.8121 setting the highest all-time cumulative GPA for any sport. Other sports recording an all-time high include men's basketball, field hockey, men's golf, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and wrestling.
Individually, 82 students posted a perfect 4.0 semester GPA. Four hundred and fifty five students had a semester GPA of 3.0 or better, while 458 students maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
