Spartans Tied for Eighth After Opening Round of the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

NEW ORLEANS – The Michigan State women's golf team opened the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on Sunday at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans with a 9-over-par 297, putting the Spartans in a tie for eighth place.
Golfstat
In an ultra-competitive field that features nine teams in the Golfstat top 30, the Spartans are just two shots out of the top four. No. 3 Texas leads the tournament after a 3-under-par 285, followed by fifth-ranked Duke at 2-under-par 286 and top-ranked USC at 1-over-par 289.
Freshman Valery Plata fired a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for fifth place. Plata had an even opening nine holes and then picked up two birdies on the final nine; she was one of just 12 players in the field to finish round one under par.
Paz Marfa Sans carded a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 33rd place.
Allyson Geer-Park, Yurika Tanida and Haylin Harris all shot 4-over-par 76s and are tied for 46th place.
Duke's Ana Belac leads the field individually after a 4-under-par 68.
Round two of the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate for the Spartans will begin at 10 a.m. ET on hole 1 Monday.
