EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team is set to compete in the Big Ten Championships hosted by Indiana on Feb. 20-23.
"We're looking forward to the week. Our girls have worked really hard this year, so we are hoping to have a good week," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "We've certainly done things to get us to where we need to be, but I'm just really excited to test ourselves over the course of the week."
The championships begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. ET with the 200-medley relay and the 800-freestyle relay. The preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. on Feb. 21-23, and the finals begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21-23.
Senior Ana Sortland is ready for her final go at the Big Ten Championships. Sortland has claimed five first-place finishes this year in the 100 breaststroke. The senior also holds the number one spot in the women's all-time top ten in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:00.99, which she set at the Northwestern Invitational earlier this season.
Sophomores Abbey Neveling and Olivia Chick are prepared to compete in 200 breaststroke and 100 freestyle this week. Neveling took first in the 200 breaststroke against Division III powerhouse Kenyon earlier this season, with a time of 2:21.59, while Chick has claimed first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle against Rutgers and Oakland this year.
Freshman Sam Villani captured her first varsity win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She took first-place in the 100 backstroke, clocking a time of 56.65.
Among the divers, senior Morgan Wellenzohn and redshirt-senior Julia Oppedisano are prepared to take the boards. Last time out, Wellenzohn and Oppedisano took first and second in the 1-meter, respectively. Both their scores were NCAA Zone qualifiers.
The Big Ten Championships will be streamed live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. Final results for each day will be posted to msuspartans.com at the conclusion of competition.
