Spartans drop doubleheader at CCU to open Brittain Resorts Baseball At The Beach action.
CCU blanked MSU 13-0 in the opener, before the Spartans were overtaken by the Chanticleers in the nightcap, 12-5, after Michigan State had an early 3-0 lead.Â
Friday's start time was pushed back two hours due to rain in the Conway area Friday morning and during batting practice and warm-ups, before letting up shortly before game time and then heavy mist off-and-on throughout the day.
The Spartans are 1-4 on the young season, while Coastal Carolina improves to 6-0. CCU has scored 10 or more runs in five of its six games this season and the Chanticleers are a combined 29-1 since the start of last season when plating nine or more runs.
"I think Coastal Carolina is an outstanding ball club. They're very well-balanced from top to bottom, they pressure you offensively, they force you to make plays, their pitching was very good today and they defended very well. I'm disappointed in how we played, but the effort was very, very good, I thought out of our guys," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "The good part about today is that we don't have to sit on it too long, we get to go out and compete again tomorrow morning."
The Spartans have a quick turnaround, returning to the diamond Saturday morning for an 11 a.m. first pitch against No. 23 North Carolina State. NC State edged Kent State, 3-2 in 10 innings in their Friday action of the Brittain Resorts Baseball At The Beach.
