Spartans Split on Day One of the B1G Match Play Championship

PALM COAST, Florida – The Michigan State men's golf team defeated Indiana in the opening round of the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Friday morning, but fell to top-seeded Illinois in round two. The Spartans topped IU, 3.5-2, before falling to Illinois, 3.5-2.5 at the Hammock Beach Resort.

The No. 8 seed Spartans will next meet No. 12 seed Wisconsin on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. on the Ocean Course. The winner will advance to the fifth-place match at 1:30 p.m., also on the Ocean Course.
In the opening-round 3.5-2 win over ninth-seeded Indiana on the Conservatory Course, Kaleb Johnson defeated Evan Yakubov (6 & 5); Zach Rosendale defeated Harry Reynolds (4 & 2); and Donnie Trosper finished 2 up on Ethan Shepherd. Troy Taylor II halved his match with Jake Brown.
IU's wins came with Jake Ochsenreiter defeating James Piot (4 & 3) and Evan Gaesser finishing 1 up on Andrew Walker.
In the afternoon quarterfinal match vs. Illinois on the Ocean Course, Johnson and Trosper both again picked up wins. Johnson topped Tommy Kuhl, 2 & 1, while Trosper edged Giovanni Tadiotto (3 & 2). Walker halved his match with Adrien Dumont de Chassa.
Noah Gillard defeated Dylan Deogun (8 & 7); Brendan O'Reilly topped Taylor (3 & 1); and Michael Feagles edged Piot (7 & 6).
Saturday's semifinal matches feature Illinois vs. No. 4 seed Ohio State and No. 10 seed Maryland vs.No. 14 seed Nebraska.
