Women’s Tennis Falls to Purdue, 4-2, in Big Ten Tournament

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 8-seeded Michigan State women's tennis team fell to No.9-seed Purdue, 4-2, in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament at the University of Nebraska on Thursday. The team completed the season with a 15-11 overall record and 6-6 mark in conference play.
The Spartans dropped the doubles point to start the match, with the Boilermakers securing wins on courts one and three.
Senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz fell to No. 53 Silvia Ambrosio and Amina Mukhametshina, 6-2, on court one.
Junior Samantha Memije and freshman Nicole Stephens evened the race for the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Caitlin Calkins and Seira Shimizu at No. 2 doubles.
The doubles point was clinched on court three, with senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds dropping a 7-6 (7-1) decision to Zala Dovnik and Alex Sabe.
With Purdue taking a 1-0 lead after doubles, the Spartans won the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Nguyen defeated Shimizu in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Stephens posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court five.
The Boilermakers then won the next three singles matches to clinch the match at 4-2.
Metcalf fell to Dovnik, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Lemonds dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Babic on court two.
The match was clinched at No. 1 singles, as Memije fell to No. 33 Ambrosio, 7-5, 6-4.
Michigan State completes its season after securing a program record third-straight year with a winning record in conference play, all under head coach Kim Bruno.
Purdue advances to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament to play No. 1-seed Michigan on Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
