Michigan State's second varsity eight placed fifth at Sunday's Big Ten Championships

Rowing Places Seventh in Loaded Big Ten Championships Field

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In a regatta featuring six ranked programs and two more receiving votes, Michigan State took seventh place (67 points) at the 2019 Big Ten Rowing Championships at Devil's Lake State Park on Sunday, May 19. In placing seventh, Michigan State placed higher than Minnesota who was the top team receiving votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Top 20 Poll.
A replay of the event will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, May 26, at 11 a.m. ET for all fans that were unable to watch live.
No. 5-ranked Michigan was the overall Big Ten champion on Sunday with 186 points, earning themselves an automatic bid in the NCAA Championships field. No. 6 Ohio State placed second with 171 points, followed by No. 11 Wisconsin (109), No. 14 Rutgers (107), No. 15 Indiana (98), No. 12 Iowa (78), Michigan State, and Minnesota (48).
MSU's second novice eight was the highest placing Spartan boat of the morning (fourth), followed by the second varsity eight which took fifth, and the first varsity eight who finished in sixth.
"All the boats raced really well today, I was proud of all of them," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "There were a couple of really tight races today in the 1V and the 2V and I wish we would've been able to pull in front of Wisconsin in both of those. Overall they had great performances and it was best racing I think they've had all season. Can't ask for more than that on a championship day, you need to race your best and I think we had that today."
After weather forced a change in schedule, Sunday's regatta opened with the varsity eight in the first race of the day where Michigan State finished with a time of 6:35.124 to take sixth in the Big Ten.
The second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:42.497 to take fifth in the Big Ten, and was just narrowly defeated by Wisconsin who finished .210 seconds quicker.
In the fours, Michigan State took eighth in the first varsity four with a time of 7:46.879 and the second varsity four was seventh with a time of 7:56.061.
Both of Michigan State's novice eight boats turned in season-best times on Sunday with the first novice eight finishing in 7:04.233 and the second novice eight nearly turning in a sub-seven-minute time of 7:01.529.

Michigan State will learn the fate of the remainder of its season on Tuesday, May 21 during the NCAA Championships selection show, which will be streamed online at 5:00 p.m. ET on ncaa.com. Michigan received the Big Ten's automatic berth into the 22-crew field that's headed to Indianapolis for the NCAA Championships, with additional Big Ten crews hoping for an at-large bid. At the NCAA championships, team's race a varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four.
