EAST LANSING -- Michigan State incoming freshman John Nodler was selected in the fifth round (150th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2019 NHL Draft on Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Â
Nodler will be one of three incoming freshmen to join the Spartans for the 2019-20 season.
Â
The native of Oak Park finished his rookie season with the USHL's Fargo Force third on the team with 42 points in 51 games. His 17 goals were fourth best on the team and his 25 assists were third most.
Â
Nodler's play this past season also earned him an invitation to play in the 2019 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
Â
Nodler has significant international experience as well, most recently helping the U.S. to gold at the 2018 World Junior A Challenge. Last summer, Nodler led all U.S. skaters the U.S. Under-18 Men's Select Team at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, with seven points (1g, 6a).
Â
He was a part of 2017 U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team that won first place at the Five Nations Tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic, recording five points (2g, 3a) in four games.
Â
Prior to playing for Fargo in the USHL, Nodler skated for Honeybaked.
Â
Nodler gives the Spartans two Calgary Flames prospects as rising sophomore Mitchell Mattson was selected in the fifth round by the organization in 2016. Nodler is the seventh Spartan in program history to be chosen by the Flames and the 121st overall draft selection in program history.
