No. 7 Michigan State Men’s Soccer Begins Exhibition Slate Sunday

The Spartans take on the Flames to start the 2019 campaign.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer begins the 2019 campaign with the first of three exhibitions, taking on UIC at Flames Field on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. (ET).
The Spartans and the Flames are very familiar with each other, as MSU hosted UIC in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at DeMartin Stadium last year. Michigan State began its run to the College Cup with a 2-0 victory.
MSU began practice on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and will be looking to test themselves early. The Spartans look to prepare themselves for a tough schedule with three quality preseason opponents, including UIC, Butler and Xavier.
This season, the Spartans will face five teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including non-conference opponents Akron (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 9). The Spartans will host No. 9 Notre Dame under the lights on Sept. 24 and will take on No. 3 Akron on the road on Oct. 15 in a re-match of the NCAA National Semifinal game.
MSU has a pair of Hermann Trophy Watch List honorees in senior midfielder Giuseppe Barone and redshirt-junior defender Patrick Nielsen. Barone is the reigning Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and a first-team All-American selection last season.
In its only home exhibition, Michigan State will face Butler on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. and will conclude the preseason at Xavier on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
