Wahlberg and Evans score and Stephans tallies two assists in exhibition win.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer defeated Toledo, 2-0, in an exhibition match Saturday night under the lights at DeMartin Stadium. Sophomores Gia Wahlberg and Camryn Evans were the goal scorers for the Spartans, with junior midfielder Danielle Stephan tallying two assists.
"One of our goals this year is to get off to really great starts; get off on the front foot and we certainly did that with a quick goal and another one," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "It would've been nice to get that third one because that really would've changed the tempo of the game. Credit Toledo, they fought all the way down the stretch."
The 2019 season started with a bang, as Wahlberg put the ball past the Toledo goalkeeper in the first minute of action. Stephan found the head of Wahlberg on a free kick to put the Spartans up 1-0.
Five minutes later, Evans tallied another goal for MSU off a pass from Stephan to increase the Spartans lead. Evans beat Toledo goalkeeper Madison Perrin one-on-one from nine yards out to double the scored for MSU. Evans led the team with eight shots, as the Michigan State offense looked unbeatable early on.
The Rockets fended off the Michigan State offense in the second half with the Spartans taking 13 shots of the 22 in the last 45 minutes.
Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal earned a shutout in net, with three saves. In the 73rd minute, Kozal was put to the test, corralling in a blast off the foot of Stephanie Currie.
"We want to play the first five of the half, first five after a goal, last five of a half. Those five-minute increments. It was a great example of that the first half, the first couple of times through," Saxton said. "I do think in the second part of the first half we kind of slowed down a little bit but we went to our bench and they did a nice job."
UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Utah Valley on Thursday, Aug. 22 in the team's regular-season home opener. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. under the lights.
