EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer shutout Eastern Michigan, 2-0, on Thursday night under the lights at DeMartin Stadium. MSU improved to 3-0-0 on the season and remain undefeated at DeMartin.
Â
The game was halted with 11:14 remaining in the second-half due to a lightning in the area. With inclement weather in the surrounding area, the game was concluded with Michigan State leading 2-0.
Â
"I thought we moved the ball well in the first half up the field, and I thought we broke down a lot going into the final third, which is something that we've been trying to work on," head coach Tom Saxton said. "Credit to Eastern, they were very well organized defensively. Second half, our emphasis offensively was to change the tempo and make hard, fresh runs, quick passes and we got a little bit more of that. Still didn't finish our chances, but we got a good breakthrough; we got the penalty kick that Camryn (Evans) drew and to get that second goal given the weather situation was critical."
Â
Michigan State had the shot advantage through the first 45 minutes, with nine shots to Eastern Michigan's four, however, the Spartans and Eagles remained scoreless at the end of the first-half.
Â
Freshman forward Paige Webber, who earned her third-consecutive start in the Spartans starting eleven, had a scoring opportunity in the fifth minute, but her shot sailed high over the net.
Â
Sophomore forward Camryn Evans scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick attempt to put the Spartans on the board first. Evans was fouled in the box by Eastern Michigan's Alia Frederick in the 56th minute. Her bullet PK shot attempt went high in the left corner past goalkeeper Mabel Dunn.
Â
Freshman forward Sydney Kloosterman increased MSU's lead in the 76th minute off a helper from senior midfielder Sadie Misiewicz, who carried the ball through traffic before passing it off to a waiting Kloosterman at the top of the box. Kloosterman's shot sailed past Dunn's hand, hitting the crossbar before going in.
Â
This was Kloosterman's second career goal, while Misiewicz tallied her second assist of the season.
Â
The MSU backline has only allowed two goals through three games, with senior midfielder Michaela Kovacs and senior defender Kassidy Madrigal playing all 79 minutes for the shutout.
Â
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal remained strong in net, earning her first career shutout, to go along with her first three career wins. Kozal had three saves to blank the Eagles and denied their pressured attack in the second half.
Â
UP NEXT: The Spartans take to the road this weekend for the first time this season. The team will travel to Boston University on Sunday, Sept. 1, with the match set to begin at 7 p.m.
