Women’s Tennis Completes Opening Weekend of Fall Season at Michigan Invitational and Milwaukee Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wis. & ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis completed the first weekend of the 2019 fall campaign at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Michigan Invitational this weekend.
"I think it was a solid performance by the Milwaukee Classic crew; showed some potential in doubles and showed some potential in singles," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "I think it was a great start to our fall season and I'm looking forward to continuing our successes. I think today the hardest day, sweeping Michigan in singles was good to see. I liked how the girls competed and how we came together as a team; I liked that they were able to be coached and make some adjustments. I think we're a step ahead of where we were last fall so that's hopeful."
At the Michigan Invitational, the Spartans faced Western Michigan, Charlotte and Michigan in singles play, and doubles against Arizona State, Michigan and Notre Dame.
Senior Samantha Memije had a successful opening weekend as she went 2-0 in singles, posting wins over Western Michigan's Lindsey Zieglar, 6-1, 6-2, and Charlotte's Rocio Safont, 6-0, 7-5.
Junior Mary Lewis also went undefeated in singles, with a 3-0 record, collecting wins over Kristina Tiraspolsky of Western Michigan, 6-1, 6-2, Margaux Maquet of Charlotte, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, and Michigan's Alyvia Jones, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Sophomores Nicole Stephens and Jennifer Timotin both went 2-1 during singles action.
Stephens defeated Gabriela Slavona of Western Michigan in a three-set battle, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. She fell to Charlotte's Jenna Dean in three-sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, before posting a win over Michigan's Lera Patiuk, 6-3, 7-5.
Timotin posted a win over Valerie Riegraf of Western Michigan in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-5. Timotin was bested by Charlotte's Pierina Imparato in three-sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. To close the weekend, she defeated Lanie Van Linge of Michigan, 6-3, 7-5.
Memije paired with Stephens in doubles, with the duo going 0-3, falling to pairs from Michigan, Notre Dame and Arizona State.
Lewis and Timotin went 1-2 on the weekend in doubles play, notching a 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Cameron Corse and Bessie Waldram.
At the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, sophomore Maja Pietrowicz advanced the furthest in the singles bracket for the Spartans with Pietrowicz and sophomore Lauren Lemonds advancing in the doubles bracket.
In the first round of singles, Pietrowicz defeated Memphis' Monique Woog, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, before falling to VCU's Paola Delgado in the second round, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Tia Mukherjee won her first match, defeating Kaylah Hodge of Navy, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. She then fell to Paris Corley of LSU, 6-3, 6-4.
Lemonds fell to Eden Richardson from LSU, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, and freshman Dagmar Zdrubecka fell to Miranda Ramirez of Syracuse, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round of singles.
In doubles, Zdrubecka and Mukherjee fell to Diercksen and Hofbauer of Eastern Carolina, 8-5.
Pietrowicz and Lemonds won their first two matches, before falling in the quarterfinals. The duo defeated Roggenburk and Kyle of Xavier, 9-8, and the No. 1-seed Capurro and Romero of Oklahoma, 9-8, in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, the duo fell to Neffa and Branstine of USC, 8-5.
In consolation singles, Zdrubecka defeated Fleur Eggink of Marquette, 6-1, 6-2, and Arizona's Glitte Heynemans, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4. Zdrubecka fell in the quarterfinals to Louisiana-Monroe's Karolina Snita, 6-2, 6-3.
Lemonds fell to Alisa Diercksen of East Carolina, 6-2, 1-6, 10-6, in the first round of consolation singles.
