EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â According to data released by the NCAA on Nov. 17, Michigan State student-athletes posted all-time highs for Graduation Success Rate (GSR), Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) and single-year Federal Graduation Rate for the 2010-11 to 2013-14 freshman cohorts for the multi-year rates and 2013-14 for the single-year rate. Â
Â
Michigan State student-athletes posted a GSR of 92%, bettering last year's previous record mark of 91%. Seven sport programs posted a 100% GSR, including men's basketball, women's golf, ice hockey, rowing, softball, men's tennis and volleyball. Eighteen of MSU's 21 sports, including football, posted a GSR of over 85%.
Â
Spartan student-athletes posted a FGR of 79%, bettering last year's 76%. Ice hockey posted a four-year FGR of 100%. MSU's single-year FGR (2013-14 freshman cohort) is 87%.Â
Â
"The academic success of our student-athletes is a testament to the effort they put forth in the classroom in addition to their athletic talents," MSU executive director of Student-Athlete Support Services Todd Edwards said. "It's also a reflection of the many people in our department who support our students, from their coaching staff, to the administration, to the academic support team. The fact that our student-athletes were experiencing unprecedented success in the classroom while winning conference championships, competing in national championships, playing in Final Fours and winning Rose and Cotton Bowls is quite an extraordinary achievement."
Â
The FGR is the proportion of first-year, full-time student-athletes who entered a school on athletics aid and graduated from that institution within six years. This federal rate does not account for students who transfer from their original institution and graduate elsewhere. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate look at student-athlete success.
