EAST LANSING – Michigan State men's golf head coach Casey Lubahn announced today (Nov. 18) the signing of two student-athletes for 2020-21. Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario) and Satchel Pierce (Edwardsburg, Mich.) have both signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spartans for next fall.
"Every recruiting class has different adjectives, and our 2021 class couldn't have fit better with where our program is going," Lubahn said. "Ashton and Satchel are exceptional young men from great families. They are mature beyond their years in their approach to everything, and it is evident in their success in academics and golf. Each of them has been consistently ranked as the top player in their state/province and they are only going to keep getting better. We are humbled by their trust in our institution and our program for their next level of development."
Ashton McCulloch | Kingston, Ontario
Lubahn on Ashton McCulloch…
"Ashton is an exceptionally accomplished athlete and comes from a part of Ontario that has great a Spartan connection in former player Craig Revell. He has been the top player in Ontario in his class for a number of years and he continues to improve significantly. He is a quiet, determined young man who lets his clubs do the talking but he is a fierce competitor evidenced by his elite finishes. From the moment we had his family on campus, Coach Ellis and I felt like they were exactly what we look for - people of great character, values, and humility. We know Ashton will be a huge contributor in the classroom and on the golf course from day one at MSU."
Was a member of the National Team Canada Junior Squad and placed second at the Squad's Selection Camp, which included carding a final round 3-under-par 69 … In his last 15 junior golf tournaments, he posted eight wins, three runner-up finishes and finished out of the top six just once … Won the 2019 Provincial Ontario Junior (U19) Boys Championship, which included carding two rounds in the 60s … Placed 13th at the 2019 Canadian Junior (U19) Boys Championship … Captured the Golf Canada Future Links Fall Series in 2019 … Played in the 2020 PGA Mackenzie Tour Canada life Series at TPC Toronto Osprey Valley … Took fourth place in the Provincial Ontario Men's Amateur championship in 2020 … Captured three individual regional titles in leading Holy Cross Catholic High School to three straight team regional titles his freshmen through junior seasons … Three-time high school team MVP (did not complete for his high school team as a senior).
Satchel Pierce | Edwardsburg, Mich.
Lubahn on Satchel Pierce…
"Satchel is a special young man who has handled some adversity over the last year so well. He has been the top player in 2021 class in Michigan for a number of years due to his maturity and consistency. He has been battling an injury over the past year and like any great athlete, he has used it as an opportunity to get better with his mechanics and preparation. Adversity reveals character and we know this is a top character young man who will be ready for the challenges and opportunities of college golf. He is a self-starter who loves to learn – two vital traits in college golf. We are proud he is going to be a Spartan who will make us better culturally, academically, and athletically."
Placed fifth at the 2019 Michigan Boys Junior PGA Championship at 1-under-par 143 … Prior to his injury was ranked the No. 1 boys golfer in Michigan in the class of 2021 by Junior Golf Scoreboard … Earned first team Division 2 All-State honors as a sophomore in 2019 … Helped Edwardsburg High School reach the State Championships for the first time in school history in 2019 … Garnered All-State honorable mention accolades as a freshman in 2018 … Voted team MVP as a freshman and sophomore … Named the Wolverine Conference Player of the year as a freshman and sophomore … One of just 10 players in the national 10-11 age group to have competed in the 2015 Chip, Putt and Drive competition at Augusta National.
