EAST LANSING – A trio of Spartans swept this week's Big Ten Stars of the week honors, the conference announced on Wednesday, Dec. 23. Goaltender Drew DeRidder was named the first star; defenseman Tommy Miller was named the second star; and forward Tommy Apap was selected as the third star. The Spartans tied (1-1) and defeated (4-3 OT) No. 16 Notre Dame on the road this past weekend.
DeRidder posted a .957 save percentage and 1.91 GAA in helping MSU go unbeaten on the weekend. The junior made 47 stops in a 1-1 tie on Saturday, including 19 saves in the third period. In Sunday's OT win, he stopped 42 shots.
The Spartans erased all eight Notre Dame power plays on the weekend, thanks in large part to DeRidder, who made 25 of his 89 total stops in the two games while the Spartans were shorthanded.
The weekly honor is the second of the season for DeRidder, who was named the league's second star of the week on Nov. 25.
Miller scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Sunday and added an assist on Apap's tying goal, which came with 22.9 seconds to play in the third period. The senior was active in all phases on Sunday, recording a game-high seven blocked shots, while leading MSU with six shots on goal.
Miller's highlight-reel OT goal came 1:26 into the extra session and was his first tally of the season. The weekly conference honor is the first of his career.
Apap sent Sunday's game to overtime with his redirection goal with 22.9 seconds to play in the third period. The senior also scored the Spartans' lone goal in the 1-1 tie on Saturday for a two-goal weekend.
The Big Ten weekly honor is the first of Apap's career.
Michigan State is back in action at home, Jan. 3-4, against Penn State.
