Morgan Beadlescomb (3,000m) and Trevor Stephenson (pole vault) earn event titles for the Spartans on day two of the Power Five Invitational.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a meet that featured a mix of collegiate and professional athletes, Michigan State track and field held their own and remained competitive to close out the Power Five Invitational from the U-M Indoor Track Building, collecting three total event titles and setting multiple personal-bests.
Along with professional athletes, Michigan State competed against athletes from Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, North Carolina and Notre Dame, representing school's from three of the Power Five conferences.
In the first day of the meet, senior Asya Reynolds set a school-record, capturing the pentathlon title with a career-best 4,079 points. MSU looked to carry that momentum going into the second day of the meet.
"I think (the leadership of) some of our upperclassmen distance runners; their presence was pretty good throughout the course of the day. I thought some of our young men and women from both sides were behaving positively," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "When you're a Division I college, almost everybody on the team has a capacity to be a leader. Sometimes the leadership is going to come from places you don't expect it; it doesn't always have to come from an upperclassmen."
The Spartans started the day off in the field, with junior Kayli Johnson placing second in shot put with a mark of 15.41m. Nikki Sargent placed fifth with a throw of 14.51m. Sophomore Rebecca Mammel placed second in the women's weight throw with a personal-best mark of 21.97m.
In the men's long jump, freshman Tony Martin took sixth place with a jump of 6.66m in his first collegiate long jump. Teammate Jon Edwards improved during his final attempts to take eighth with a mark of 6.50.
The pole vault crew continued its success, as they captured an event title on the men's side behind a mark of 5.16m by sophomore Trevor Stephenson. Sophomore Kyle Nouhan placed fourth with a mark of 4.71m.
Continuing off of yesterday's 60m dash and hurdle preliminaries, six Spartans were competing in the finals for the men and women. In the women's 60m hurdles, junior Jaiden Paris placed seventh, with a time of 8.77. On the men's side, freshman Kendel Hammock also placed seventh with a time of 9.07.
"I wasn't concerned with how they placed, I was most concerned with how we re-engaged, and I thought we did a good job of that. Some of our lack of experience probably showed a little bit but I felt like they came to compete and for me, that's a big step for the entire group," Drenth said. "I felt like we made progress, all weekend, as an entire group than we were the last time we competed. I felt like it was a pretty good day from that standpoint."
In the 60m dash, junior Brooke Bogan placed fifth, turning in a time of 7.51. Running for Athleta, Allyson Felix won the 60m dash in 7.35.
For the men in the 60m dash, the Spartans went 5-6-7, with freshman Antonio Postell placing fifth (6.92), freshman Tony Martin coming in sixth (6.95) and senior Jonathan Fife placing seventh (6.96).
In the 400m, redshirt-freshman Nala Barlow ran a personal-best 57.95 for seventh place overall.
The Michigan State distance squad continued to show strong performances, competing against several professional runners.
In the 800m run, senior Sarah Anderson was the top collegiate finisher, clocking in at a personal-best 2:08.27 for sixth place overall. Anderson was followed closely by senior Dillon McClintock, who turned in a time of 2:08.33 for seventh place. On the men's side sophomore Jalen Smith placed third, covering the 800 meters in 1:54.27.
In the women's mile, junior Lindsey Rudden competed in a heat with former Spartan All-American Leah O'Connor, who finished fourth overall (4:39.32). Rudden finished second among collegiate runners, with a time of 4:46.33. Senior Karrigan Smith placed ninth, clocking in at 4:50.92. Senior Annie Fuller placed fifth in the women's 3000m, with a time of 9:23.47.
Closing off the meet for the Spartans, junior Morgan Beadlescomb earned the 3000m title and set a meet record, clocking in at 8:01.03, for a personal-best time. Freshman Abdi Ahmed placed fourth in his first collegiate 3000m race, turning in a time of 8:20.69.
"I think we have to sustain our energy and sustain our sense of purpose; those are critical elements. One week of practice doesn't make you better, one week of practice gives you an idea of what it will take to get better and hopefully we're recognizing that," Drenth said.
