No. 13 Spartans in Fifth Place After Two Rounds at the Allstate Sugar Bowl

NEW ORLEANS – The 13th-ranked Michigan State women's golf team shot a 1-over-par 585 (292-293) in the opening two rounds of the Allstate Sugar Bowl at English Turn Golf and Country Club on Monday. The Spartans are in fifth place, one shot back of Houston and four shots back of third-place Miami. No. 10 Florida leads the tournament at 12-under-par 572 (288-284).

Paz Marfa Sans led MSU at the par-73, 6,336-yard course as she's tied for fifth place. Marfa Sans had the third-lowest score of any player in the opening round with a 3-under-par 70. She followed it up with an even-par 73 and is 3-under-par 143 for the tournament, just four shots back of the leader – Mim Sangkopong of NC State.
Valery Plata made the biggest improvement of any Spartan on the day as she followed up an opening-round 2-over-par 75 with a 3-under-par 70. She's 1-under-par 145 and tied for 15th place. Her second round included an eagle on the par-5, 476-yard 11th hole.
Haylin Harris shot a pair of 1-over-par 74s. She's 2-over-par 148 and tied for 29th place.
Yurika Tanida is tied for 33rd place at 3-over-par 149 (73-76), while Allyson Geer-Park is in 47th at 5-over-par 151 (75-76).
Nina Rissi is playing as an individual and is 2-over-par 148 (72-76).
The final round of the tournament will begin with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start on Tuesday.
