EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team is set to compete in the Big Ten Championships hosted by the University of Iowa on Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 19-22.
I'm looking forward to going out to Iowa and rising to the challenge of competing in the Big Ten Championship," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We have had a very good year and we have prepared well for this challenge."
The championships open with finals in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Competition on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will consist of preliminary heats beginning at 11 a.m. ET and finals each evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Senior Allie Heineman has been key for the Spartans this season. In the Spartans meet against Kenyon back on Nov. 9, Heineman picked up her fourth straight win in the 50 freestyle and her second-consecutive in the 100 freestyle. In the final home meet of the season against Cleveland State in Jan. 24, Heineman swept the night in her respective events with wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.
Leading the team in overall wins is junior Erin Szara with 13. When the women defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 1, Szara claimed her fifth straight victory in the 100 breaststroke for the team's longest consecutive win streak this year. Through the 2020 slate alone, Szara picked up five victories including a sweep in her respective events, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, against Cleveland State on Jan. 24.
Freshmen Emma Inch and Kasey Venn have been bright spots for the Spartan women. Inch broke two varsity records in the 400 freestyle and 1500 freestyle and set two lifetime bests in the 400 freestyle and 400 IM. Venn also broke a varsity record in the 100 butterfly. Both women were also named to the USA Swimming World 100 Under-18 in the 1500 freestyle by Inch and the 200 breaststroke by Venn.
Among the divers, junior Amanda Ling leads the way with 10 wins on the season along with three sweeps on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards against Oakland, Kenyon and Northwestern. Ling, along with redshirt-senior Julia Oppedisano and junior Erin Neely, have all qualified for the NCAA Zone Regionals.
The Big Ten Championships will be streamed live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. The finals on Saturday, Feb. 22 will be live and available on the FoxSports app. Results can be found at the conclusion of each day at msuspartans.com.
