
Gates, Koenig and Langford Honored as PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2019-20 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.

The honorees for February are Carson Gates (men's tennis), Emilee Koenig (women's rowing) and Joshua Langford (men's basketball).

Gates, a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., is a physiology major with a 4.0 grade point average. Playing mainly out of the No. 3 spot in the singles lineup this season, he is tied for the team lead with four dual victories. Gates is a member of MSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and has joined his fellow student-athletes in community activities such as food drives, Teams for Toys events, Spartan Buddy, hospital visits and wheelchair tennis.

Koenig, a junior from Dayton, Ohio, is a communication major. This semester, she has balanced her responsibilities as a student-athlete with being an undergraduate research assistant for a communications professor. On the water, she is a fixture in the varsity four boat.

Langford, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., is an advertising major. A two-time captain, Langford has missed the last season and a half due to injury but has been a strong support for his teammates from the sidelines. While on the court, he has averaged 10.2 points in 83 career games, in addition to being one of the team's top defenders. Off the court, Langford has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Accessible Trick-or-Treating, March is Reading opportunities and numerous local elementary school visits.
