Winston, Tillman Earn All-American Honors

East Lansing, Mich. -Â Michigan State men's basketball senior guard Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and junior forward Xavier Tillman (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Christian) earned All-American honors from The Athletic on Thursday morning.
Winston was a second team selection, while Tillman earned third team honors.
The recognition by The Athletic is one of four national honors for Winston, who was named a Sporting News Second Team All-American, earned first team honors from NCAA March Madness and was a second team selection by NBCSports.com. It is the second national honor for Tillman, who was a third team selection by NBCSports.com.
Winston, who was an All-Big Ten First Team pick by the media and the coaches and was selected to the USBWA All-District V team, led Michigan State, and ranked third in the Big Ten, in scoring with 18.6 points per game and was fourth in the league with 5.9 assists. He led the league in 3-point field goal percentage (43.2%), was second in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (85.2%), eighth in field goal percentage (44.8%) and tied for seventh in the league in steals (1.2)
He was one of only seven Division I players averaging at least 18.0 points, 5.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game.
Winston finished his Michigan State career ranked sixth all-time with 1,969 points and is the all-time leader in assists at MSU and in the Big Ten Conference with 894. He is one of only four players in Division I history to score at least 1,900 points and hand out at least 850 assists.
Tillman, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a second team all-league selection, was selected to the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday. He finished second on the team in scoring (13.7 ppg), led the team in rebounds (10.3, third in the Big Ten) and blocked shots (2.1 bpg) and was third on the team in assists (3.0 apg).
He was the only Division I player averaging at least 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocked shots during the 2019-20 season. Tillman was also the only Division I player since 1992-93 to reach those numbers, joining Tim Duncan at Wake Forest in 1996-97 and Bo Outlaw in 1992-93 at Houston.Â
In addition, Tillman was also the only Big Ten player among the top-15 in the league in points, rebounds, assists, blocked shots and steals.
