Spartan infielder earns MSU’s second B1G POW this season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball redshirt-sophomore infielder Peter Ahn has been named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, for his performance over the weekend, as announced by the conference office on Monday, March 2.
Minnesota's Mex Meyer was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Nebraska's Leighton Banjoff was the Freshman of the Week.
Ahn joins teammate, senior outfielder Bryce Kelley as the Spartans' Big Ten Player of the Week recipients this season, as Michigan State has collected two of the first three of the season and three of the last five weekly honors dating back to last season, after Royce Ando earned the honor on May 13, 2019. Ahn and Kelley's accolades this season have surpassed last year's total of one, as Ando's honor was the only Big Ten weekly honor for the Spartans last season.
A native of Delafield, Wisconsin, Ahn hit .636 (7-of-11) for the weekend, with six RBI and five runs scored, helping MSU win the 2020 First Pitch Invitational going 3-0 for the weekend at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive. He posted an .818 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage. Ahn also added two stolen bases, one walk and one sacrifice fly, in scoring five runs.
Ahn posted at least two hits in all three games, including going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in MSU's 8-7 win over Kansas on Friday, scoring the winning run of the walk-off victory, adding one walk and walk stolen base, along with a sac fly. The stolen base came after leading off the ninth with a single and then stealing second to get in scoring position, and moved to third on a passed ball, before scoring the winning run on Zach Iverson's walk-off single.
He went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 win over Western Carolina, driving in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the first, adding a single and stolen base in the third. Ahn then wrapped up the weekend going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in MSU's come-from-behind 8-6 win over Ball State. He smacked an RBI triple in the third inning of Sunday's game for MSU's second run of the game, and later, in the seventh, knocked a two-run single for the Spartans' first runs of inning, sparking MSU's comeback from down 6-2 for second and third RBI of the day.
Defensively, Ahn made 16 putouts and an assist without an error in playing first base all 27 innings of MSU's weekend action.
Ahn and the Spartans will remain in Greenville for the first part of its Spring Break week, playing South Carolina-Upstate on Wednesday, March 4 at 4 p.m. at Fluor Field in an all-Spartan clash.
The MSU Spartans will then head to Pensacola, Florida to play in the Cox Diamond Invitational, Friday-Sunday, March 6-8. MSU will open action against Troy on Friday, March 6, then Louisiana on Saturday, March 7 and Samford on Sunday, March 8.
