East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State senior men's basketball player Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and freshman Rocket Watts (Detroit, Mich./SPIRE Academy [Ohio]) were named the Big Ten Player of the Week and the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
The duo helped the Spartans to a pair of wins last week, winning at then-No. 20 Penn State, 79-71, on Tuesday, and following that up with a win over then-No. 20 Ohio State, 80-69, on Sunday.
The win over Ohio State clinched a share of the Big Ten Regular Season title, the third-straight for Michigan State, the 10th under Head Coach Tom Izzo and the 16th for the program.
Winston averaged 20.5 points and 6.5 assists while connecting on 71.4 percent (15-of-21) of his shots from the field, including 55.6 percent of his 3-point attempts (5-of-6). He had 14 points and seven in the win at Penn State and followed that up with a game-high 27 points and six assists in the win over Ohio State, his last regular season game at the Breslin Center.
The senior captain is averaging 18.6 points and 5.9 assists per game.
This is the second-straight week Winston has been named player of the week, the third time this season (Jan. 6) and the eighth honor in his career.
Watts was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career after averaging 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. He scored 18 points and had four rebounds in the Penn State win and then followed that back up with 19 points and five boards against Ohio State.
Watts is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.0 points per game and averaged 10.2 points per game in Big Ten Conference games.
