EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head women's basketball coach Suzy Merchant has announced the addition of Matilda Ekh (pronounced Eck) to the 2020-21 roster.
"We are thrilled to add Matilda to the Spartan family. She has played at the highest level of international basketball in Sweden and on the world stage. We love her versatility and ability to be a playmaker and scorer. Her basketball IQ is off the charts, and we can't wait to have her put on a Spartan uniform," Merchant said.
Ekh is a 6-0 guard/forward who hails from Västerås, Sweden. She has a wealth of international experience, having played for Luleå Basket for coach Robin Sandberg. In 2019-20, Ekh played with the Swedish First League and despite the shortened season, she was still named Rookie of the Year.
During the 2018-19 season, Ekh won the U19 Swedish Championship with her high school team, Riksbasketgymnasiet Luleå, under coach Mikael Johansson. She was also named MVP and earned a spot on the All-Star team. Also during the 2018-19 campaign, Ekh was captain of the U18 Swedish National Team that finished fourth in the U18 European Championship, B Division. She also captured the B Division of the U16 European Championship during the 2017-18 season, taking MVP honors.
Ekh is the daughter of Anna-Karin Klang and Johan Ekh. Her mother played basketball for Sweden's First League, while her father played in Sweden's Second League. Her brother and sister both also play basketball in Sweden.
As the latest Spartan women's basketball signee, Ekh joins Kendall Bostic (Kokomo, Indiana/Northwestern High School) who signed National Letter of Intent in November and Jayla James (Upper Marlboro, Maryland/Riverdale Baptist), who transferred from Penn State.
