East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State assistant director of Athletics Communications Kara Fisher has been named the 2020 recipient of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Achievement Award.
CoSIDA Feature: Fisher One of the "Helpers"
The Achievement Award is annually presented to one associate or assistant media relations director in the University Division and one in the College Division who has made outstanding contributions to the field of college sports information, provided exceptional service to their institution or conference office, and have 10 or more years of experience in the profession.
A veteran of both a conference office as well as small and large Division I athletic departments, Fisher has been selfless in her approach to promoting all 25 of Michigan State’s varsity athletics programs. Her primary sport assignments includes the men’s soccer and women’s basketball programs, with additional oversight of women’s tennis, and track and field and cross-country. She also is one of the two leads on supervising the athletic communications student staff. In addition to her invaluable contributions to the MSU athletic department, Fisher is a longtime member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee and is also a volunteer mentor for CoSIDA’s new Mentorship program.

Fisher has embraced every opportunity to be a leader, teacher, mentor, and friend to those not only in the MSU athletics department, but also at every other stop during her professional career. She began as a student at Michigan State before transferring to the University of Illinois, where she worked in their athletic communications office before earning her bachelor’s degree. After an internship at Florida, she worked at the University of South Carolina (1998-2001), the Western Athletic Conference (2001-08) and Utah State University (2008-14) before making her way back to the Big Ten and Michigan State University, where she’s been a part of the athletic department since 2014.
Fisher joins an esteemed group of Athletics professionals to win this award. First introduced in 2014-15, previous winners include Lindy Brown (Duke), Kent Lowe (LSU), Chris Masters (Big Ten Conference) Dave Lohse (North Carolina), and Diane Nordstrom (Wisconsin). She is the third woman overall to receive the award and second from the University Division, and the first person of color to be so honored.
A native of Aurora, Illinois, Fisher and her husband, Zach (who is also an assistant director of Athletic Communications at MSU) reside in Holt.
