Spartan senior outfielder earns academic accolades
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball senior outfielder Bryce Kelley was named to the 2020 Google Cloud Academic First-Team All-District® Baseball Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).Â
This is Kelley's first career CoSIDA Academic All-District honor. Kelley will now advance to the national ballot.Â
Kelley's honor in 2020 marks the fourth-straight season that at least one MSU player earned Academic All-District accolades, after Dan Chmielewski collected the honor last season, and both Chmielewski and Zack McGuire earned recognition in both 2017 and 2018.Â
It is the 10th Academic All-District honor by a Spartan player under head coach Jake Boss Jr., and the 19th in program history.
This is Kelley's second academic honor of the spring, as he was the baseball team's recipient of MSU Student-Athlete Support Services Scholar-Athlete Award winner for the highest GPA on the team.
Kelley, a native of Rockford, Michigan, has a 3.79 GPA, earning his degree in supply chain management this spring. He was also recognized with Highest Honors on the MSU Athletics Honor Roll. Kelley is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, as well as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award Recipient.
On the field, Kelley will be returning in 2021 after the NCAA's announcement of granting another year to 2020 spring sports seniors whose season was cut short by the COVID-19 world pandemic.
Kelley is No. 2 on MSU's career stolen base list with 71 swipes, entering next season just eight shy of the record of 79 stolen bases held by Anthony Cheky (2012-15).
He was named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 17, 2020, for his performance in the opening weekend, in which he hit .647 (11-of-17) for the weekend, which led the Big Ten by over .100, as well as ranking 15th in the NCAA after the first weekend.Â
Kelley played and started in all 15 games, one of only two Spartans to start in every game, along with Bailey Peterson, and one of three players to play in all 15 contests, along with Peterson and Peter Ahn. He shared the team and Big Ten lead with eight stolen bases, ranking tied for 45th in NCAA, and was matched by Peterson. He was also second on the team with a .400 average, ranking tied for fifth in the B1G and tied for 88th in the NCAA, and also ranked sixth in the conference with a .486 on-base percentage.
In the field, he posted perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, with 19 putouts and two assists, along with using speed to cut down several hits, turning doubles into singles, collecting the Danny Litwhiler Defensive Player of the Year MSU team award. The highlight outfield assist of the season was his throw to Gabe Sotres for the tag at the plate in top of ninth for defensive walk-off vs. Western Carolina on Feb. 29, to preserve a 4-3 Victory for MSU.
