EAST LANSING – Michigan State junior men's golfer James Piot has been voted to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the conference announced on Monday (May 18).
"We're happy for James to once again be a part of the All-Big Ten Team," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "I know how hard he works and while he wasn't completely satisfied with this year, it's always special to be honored by the conference and know he will be working to push higher next year."
Piot had the first two wins of his career in 2019-20 and his 72.18 team-leading scoring average was the best mark in his three seasons for the Green and White. The junior from Canton started the year by taking medalist honors at the Island Resort Intercollegiate with a career best 9-under-par 207. Later in the opening month of the season, he tied at the top of the field of the Inverness Intercollegiate with a 2-under-par 211.
In total, Piot finished in the top 10 four times in the shortened 2019-20 season. This past year also saw Piot record the lowest round of his collegiate career as he fired a 6-under-par 66 in the second round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in October.
It's the second straight year Piot has been named to the All-Big Ten Team as he was a first-team honoree last season. He also garnered PING All-Midwest Region honors for the second straight year.
Piot was also the Spartans' recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. The honorees chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
