Was a three-year letterwinner at Kaneland High School for head coach Brian Aversa ... Helped the Knights to a program- record 27 wins his junior season of 2019, as Kaneland posted a 27-10 record, winning the regional championship before falling in the IHSA Regionals, before the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic ... Earned All-Conference accolades, as well as first-team All-Area as a junior, after posting an unblemished 8-0 record with a 2.73 ERA, ringing up 23 strikeouts while only yielding seven walks in nine appearances ... Fired a five-inning perfect game vs. Bayside Academy (Ala.) on March 26, 2019, as the Knights won, 12-0, at the Gulf Coast Classic Tournament in Alabama ... Played summer club league for Kane County Crush, helping them to an 18-10-2 record, including winning the Kerry Wood Invitational ... Rated as the No. 34 pitcher in Illinois as well as the No. 94 overall player in Illinois by Prep Baseball Report ... Also a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree ... Son of Nicholas and Brandie Kottmeyer ... Both of his parents were swimmers at the University of Wisconsin ... Intends on majoring in accounting or finance at MSU with career ambitions of being a financial analyst when his baseball career is over ... Chose Michigan State because of the quality of the baseball program, the coaching staff, the campus environment and prestigious education, including the Broad College of Business ... Selected MSU over Indiana, Maryland, Purdue, Bucknell, Rochester, Southern Illinois and Grand Valley State.
MSU Assistant Coach/Pitching Coach Mark Van Ameyde on Kottmeyer: "Mason has made tremendous progress over the past year and has become someone we are really excited to add to the pitching staff. He is not only a gifted athlete but an excellent student as well. I look forward to working with Mason and helping him continue to grow and improve."
MSU Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Graham Sikes on Kottmeyer: "Mason is a great pickup for us. He is a late bloomer in that he's only recently added velocity but he's had pitch-ability for quite some time, as his 8-0 record as a junior suggests. His change-up can be a good pitch, and I think his fastball is going to get better once he's here. I could see 92-93 fairly quickly. He's got a tremendous work ethic and a high desire level to be good. In addition to his physical attributes, he's a 4.0 student and a 30 ACT, so he checks a lot of boxes in the recruiting process. I look forward to having him here in the fall."
