East Lansing, Mich --Â Â Â Mary Martha Kennedy (Mount Vision, NY) was named both a 2020 Pocock All-America Nominee and also earned the Scholar-Athlete Award, as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).Â
Â
Kennedy, a senior Animal Science major, was joined by eight teammates on the CRCA Scholar-Athlete list: sophomores Rachel Drogs (Dearborn, Mich./Kinesiology), Sarah Flowney (Rochester Hills, Mich./Human Biology), Aleah Hahn (West Olive, Mich./Biosystems engineering), Alixandra Krawcke (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dietetics), Mackenzie Rugg (Cedar Springs, Mich./Kinesiology), and Allison Uckele (South Haven, Mich./Chemical Engineering), and classmates Claire Hesseltine (Ann Arbor, Mich./Education) and Halle Nielsen (Ada, Mich./Communications).
Â
The absence of competitive results or a national championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic precluded awarding First and Second Team All America Awards for the 2020 season. However, the coaches of the CRCA still wanted to find a way to recognize the top performers in NCAA women's rowing by allowing coaches to still submit nominations and having those nominees recognized. Â
Â
Scholar-Athlete Awards requirements were also modified for the 2020 season.  Student athletes had to hold sophomore eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50% of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season*, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year. These were the criteria solely for 2020, as the season was canceled due to Covid-19. In previous years, a CRCA scholar-athlete must have raced in an NCAA boat for 75% of the season or at the conference championships.
