Five Spartan Women Golfers Named WGCA All-American Scholars

EAST LANSING – Five members of the Michigan State women's golf team were included on the list of Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars, announced Monday (June 29) by the organization. Nina Rissi, Paz Marfa Sans, Sydney Naro, Valery Plata and Yurika Tanida were all honored, giving MSU a program record number of All-American Scholars.
For Marfa Sans, it's the fourth consecutive year she has received the honor, while it's the third straight accolade for Tanida, who will be a senior in the fall. Rising juniors Naro and Plata both garnered their second career honor.
Student-athletes must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to receive the accolade.
Marfa Sans graduated with a 3.66 GPA in accounting and will return next season as a graduate student. The native of Barcelona, Spain recorded a 72.94 scoring average in earning her third All-Big Ten selection with a spot on the second team. She had four top-10 finishes on the season, including her first-career tournament win as she claimed medalist honors at the home Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 22-23).
Tanida, who is a psychology major with a 3.61 GPA, had the best season of her career with a 72.84 scoring average, which also helped her garner first team All-Big Ten accolades. Tanida had three top-five finishes on the year, including a career best second place showing at the UCF Challenge in February.
Plata was the Big Ten Player of the Year and co-winner of MSU's George Alderton Female Athlete of the Year honor, all while carrying a 3.77 GPA in business. Plata led MSU in scoring average at 72.37 and finished in the top 20 of all but one tournament. She earned her first-career win as she also helped MSU to the team title at the prestigious Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 11-13) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Naro is a comparative cultures and politics major with a 3.73 GPA. She appeared in four tournaments and had a 77.2 scoring average.
Rissi, a freshman from Barcelona, Spain, boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA as a freshman. She saw action in four tournaments while posting a 75.55 average and a top five finish.
