Trio of Spartans to Compete in U.S. Women’s Amateur

EAST LANSING -- Three members of the Michigan State women's golf team have qualified to play in the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, the USGA has announced. Haylin Harris, Yurika Tanida and Valery Plata will all take part in the event, which will occur Aug. 3-9 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Harris made it to the round of 32 at last year's U.S. Women's Amateur, ensuring her a spot at this year's event. Plata (ranked 169) and Tanida (ranked 178) both received invitations by virtue of their World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Harris had two top-10 finishes in 2019-20. The junior posted a 73.89 scoring average in appearing in all seven tournaments.
Plata, a WGCA honorable mention All-America selection, was named the Big Ten Player of the Year last year. She was also the co-winner of MSU's George Alderton Female Athlete of the Year award. The junior from Colombia placed in the top 20 of every tournament and led MSU with a 72.37 scoring average.
Tanida, who will be a senior this fall, earned her second straight All-Big Ten selection last year as she was named to the first team. She had the best season of her career in 2019-20 with a 72.84 scoring average.
