Michigan State Earns NABC Team Academic Excellence Award
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball players Jack Hoiberg (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Xavier Tillman (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Christian) were selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, while the Spartans were a recipient of a Team Academic Excellence Award.
Hoiberg and Tillman were selected to the NABC Honors Court, the eighth-straight year the Spartans have had team members earn that honor.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. They must be a junior or senior and a varsity player, carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year, must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution and a member of an NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA Division I school with an NABC member coach.
Tillman, a communication major with a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average, was a Second Team Academic All-America® selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this year. He was a recipient of a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Hoiberg, a communication major with a 3.42 GPA, was an Academic All-Big Ten selection this year.
The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2019-20 season. In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2019-20 season.
The Spartans posted a cumulative 3.17 GPA during the 2019-20 academic year. This is the first time Michigan State earned an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, which began in 2012-13.
