Southpaw pitched 1.0 inning of relief for Seattle Mariners
***UPDATE: Misiewicz made his second MLB appearance on Sunday, July 26, pitching a three-up, three-down inning with one strikeout.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Former Michigan State baseball player Anthony Misiewicz made his Major League Baseball debut Friday night with the Seattle Mariners on MLB's Opening Night.
Getting called out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the sixth inning, Misiewicz pitched 1.0 inning of relief in the Mariners' 8-2 loss at Houston, firing one strikeout. Friday was Opening Day of the 2020 MLB season, in which teams are playing a 60-game season because of the shutdown forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Misiewicz becomes the first Spartan alum in the Major Leagues since A.J. Achter was with the Detroit Tigers in 2017. Overall, Misiewicz is the 40th former Spartan baseball player in MLB. He is also only the second former Spartan to play for the Mariners, joining Dann Howitt (1992-93).
A native of Anchor Bay, Michigan, Misiewicz was three-year letterwinner for MSU from 2013-15 and was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round (545 overall) of the 2015 MLB Draft.
The Spartan southpaw tied a career best with five wins (5-4) in a career-high 68.2 innings of work in 2015. Misiewicz posted a 3.80 ERA and held opponents to a .207 batting average - the second lowest on the team. He made 18 appearances, including eight starts. The lefty tied a career high with nine Ks in 6.1 innings of relief at Minnesota (May 15, 2015).
As a sophomore, he ranked second on the team with 29 appearances and held opposing batters to a .228 batting average - the sixth-best mark in the Big Ten. He ranked second on the team and fourth in the conference with 68 strikeouts.
In three seasons as a Spartan, Misiewicz was 13-12 with a 3.26 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 169.1 innings.
