The No. 9 Spartan Women look to defend their title.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's cross country season is set to begin on Saturday, Jan. 30 with the Big Ten Championships in Shelbyville, Indiana at the Blue River Memorial Park. The competition will begin with the women's race at 12:30 p.m. ET and the men's race at 2 p.m. ET.
"Our men's and women's teams are excited to be at their best on Saturday and to support one another in a competitive conference race. Our message since January has been to focus on the adventure aspect of this season with the winter cross country during an indoor track season and to look forward to reveling in it," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "Every team has to race in the same conditions, so we are not concerned with the weather or course. We've known since the fall of this coming meet and have looked forward to racing in the elements."Â
The No. 9 MSU women look to defend their 2020 Big Ten title in the 6K race, beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. Last season, Michigan State won its seventh Big Ten crown and their first since 2014. The No. 9-ranked Spartans tallied 56 points in the women's 6k, surpassing both No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 8 Michigan. Senior India Johnson will be leading the MSU squad, earning second-team All-Big honors last season.
The event will conclude with the men's 8k race, beginning at 2 p.m. ET. Last season, the men finished in seventh place at the B1G Championships. Michigan State's top returner on the men's side will be sophomore Abdi Ahmed. Sophomore Fraser Wilson, junior John Petruno and junior Steven Stine also scored the Spartans last season.
"We have two competitive teams. Both are ready to race well. On the men's side, James Uhlenberg, Jeremy Kloss, Abdi Ahmed, Brayden Law and Brendan Favazza will be our leaders on the men's side, and on the women's side, Lynsie Gram, India Johnson, Jenna Magness, Katie Osika and Casey Mossholder. Honestly, we could add more to that list. We have two teams that are looking forward to Saturday," Breznau said.
BTN will debut coverage of the 2020-21 Big Ten Cross Country Championships at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Spartan indoor track & field season will continue on Feb. 11-12 at the B1G SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
