East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis opened the 2021 MSU Invite Friday morning at the Mason High School tennis courts.
The Spartanswent 7-3 doubles actions as well as four singles victories in the first round of competition.
MSU's Josh Portnoy and Kazuki Matsuno were the first to step off the court in doubles play. The pair fell to Ben George and Joaquin Caballer of Western Michigan, 6-2. Max Sheldon and Graydon Lair teamed up for a match against David Mizrahi and Kyle Tang of Louisville. It was Lair's first match since the Milwaukee Invite on Sept. 18.
The first win of the day for the Spartans came when Jarreau Campbell and Carson Gates earned a doubles win against Indiana's Jagger Saylor and Mac Rodgers, only allowing one point from their opponents in the 6-1 victory.
Luke Baylis and Anthony Pero teamed up in the second round of doubles action for a 6-0 sweep of their opponents Felix Nordby and Natan Spear from Northwestern. Matsuno and Portnoy redeemed themselves after the morning's loss with a 6-2 victory against a duo from Illinois and WMU in the afternoon.
In singles play, Matsuno fell in a battle against WMU's Caballer in a match that went into a third set. After a 6-1 lead in the first set by Caballer, Matsuno won 6-2 to force the third set, in which Caballer sealed the win with a 10-0 sweep.
Portnoy won in a rematch against a Bronco opponent, taking down George in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. Campbell picked up another win on the day with a straight-set besting of Indiana's Rodgers, 6-0, 6-3.
Lair came back from the morning's doubles loss to win in straight sets over Tang from Louisville. Both sets were close but Lair came away with the win, 6-3, 6-4. Gates also earned another win, carrying over his momentum from his morning doubles victory and earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over his Hoosier opponent.
"We were prepared to have more results in singles, but fell short," head coach Gene Orlando said. "We have a lot of opportunities to flip the script in singles tomorrow."
Competition continues at the invite tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m. and running until 5 p.m. with matches continuing in the main and back draws of singles and doubles.
