EAST LANSING, Mich. – After a fourth-place finish with a personal record time at the Nuttycombe Invitiational last weekend, Michigan State senior Jenna Magness was named the Big Ten Cross Country Women's Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Magness led all MSU and Big Ten women's runners at the Wisconsin-hosted meet, finishing with a time of 20:05.6 in the championship 6K race. The time was the best 6K finish during her Spartan career, shaving 20 seconds off her previous PR. Magness was also 3.9 seconds better than the next closest Big Ten runner in Minnesota's Bethany Hasz (sixth), while trailing winner Ceili McCabe of West Virginia by 8.2 seconds. The Grand Ledge, Mich., native also edged out Iowa State's Cailie Logue (seventh), who beat Magness in the Roy Griak Invitational last month.
This is the 2020 NCAA All-American's second time this season being honored in the league's weekly awards, previously earning the distinction after her second-place finish at the Griak with a 6K time of 20:59.6, just 1.7 seconds behind Logue's winning time.
Following this weekend's EMU Fall Classic, Magness and the Spartans head to the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 29 in University Park, Pa. The Michigan State women are set to defend their conference title from last season, while the men's side will look to improve on a fourth-place finish.
