East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball team met with the media for its annual on-campus media day in advance of the 2021-22 season on Wednesday at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans play their first exhibition game on Wednesday, Oct. 27, hosting Ferris State (BTN+, 7 p.m.).
Head Coach Tom Izzo addressed the media and took questions for an hour in the press room at the Breslin Center to start the day.
"We've had a great couple of weeks of practice," Izzo said. "We had one bad practice, last Friday, we let the Izzone Campout people come in and I don't think we handled that very well. Other than that, I think we've been at a very, very high level."
Izzo also spoke about his team captains, senior forward Gabe Brown (Ypsilanti, Mich../Belleville) and junior forward Malik Hall (Aurora, Ill./Sunrise Christian Academy [Kan.]).
"Our captains are two different guys," Izzo said. "In Malik, you've got the quiet assassin who is a very intelligent kid who kind of helps me with the kids on the court and off. And you've got Gabe, who's my Energizer Bunny, I kind of wind him up and tell him to go and he brings a lot of the enthusiasm. So I've got a combination of both. Neither one of them has big egos. One of the things I love about this team is that it's egoless."
Following Izzo's press conference, Michigan State's players were available to the media for an hour before practice.
MSU will play a pair of exhibition games at the Breslin Center, against Ferris State (Oct. 27) and Grand Valley State (Nov. 4).
The Spartans open the 2021-22 regular season next Tuesday, Nov. 9, playing Kansas in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Big Ten Conference play begins on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at Minnesota, with the conference home opener on Saturday, Dec. 11 against Penn State.
