EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis wrapped up day three of the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday night at the Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
The highlight of the day was freshman Max Sheldon winning a pair of matches in the main singles draw. Up against 14-seed Nick Beaty of Michigan, he pulled off the upset in a third-set decision. After going up 6-2, he battled to 6-7(4) with Beaty, coming up with a win in the deciding set, 6-4. Later that afternoon, he took on Jackson Boone of Western Michigan, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Sheldon advances to the round of 16 in the singles tournament continuing tomorrow.
Jack Winkler won his first game of the draw against Wisconsin's Leonard Soha. Winkler came from behind after a 4-6 opening set to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 for the victory. He advanced to play Kweisi Kenyatte, a 16-seed from Illinois, and was retired at 4-6, 6-4.
"Max Sheldon played his best tennis this fall, and it was great to see Jack find his game and closing in on his level after being out for two seasons," head coach Gene Orlando said. "Overall a great day for the Spartans, also winning a lot of matches in the consolation bracket!"
Carson Gates and Graydon Lair both won their second matches of the day as part of the consolation draw. Up against Flynn Lohse of Western Michigan, Gates came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in straight sets. Lair battled it out against Michigan's Alex Zederbauer, pulling off the win in a third-set tiebreaker.
